Viajero y arqueólogo estadounidense. Sus viajes a Medio Oriente derivaron en la publicación de dos libros. Con su amigo dibujante Frederick Catherwood se embarcó a Honduras en 1839 para explorar antiguas ruinas mayas de cuya existencia se rumoreaba en ese entonces. Identificaron nuevos e importantes sitios en Copán, Uxmal, Palenque y otras regiones. Describieron sus hallazgos en Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan [Incidentes de un viaje a América central, Chiapas y el Yucatán] (1841) y narraron una segunda expedición en Incidents of Travel in Yucatan [Incidentes de un viaje al Yucatán] (1843). Sus libros despertaron un enorme interés por la región entre legos y especialistas.
